My latest project is the iPhone game 3 Degrees of Wikipedia. It has a Core Animation-heavy UI, and a back-end running on Google App Engine + Tornado + Reddit's ranking algorithm.
It has been the number one Trivia game in the US App Store.
I design and build websites.
Recent works include a storefront for my barber and a fashion portfolio.
Having once seriously considered a career in art photography, I still carry a Contax T2 with me all the time. My photos have been published and displayed on many occasions, including the New York Photo Festival & Adbusters.
In 2010, I co-started the video storefront service Vittyo, and learned invaluable lessons in marketing and customer development.
For 2 years, I worked as a visualization & analytics researcher on various projects with Boeing.
I designed the Color Block display, as well as a map on global warming.
You can follow fragments of my thoughts on Twitter, @ivanzhao. The latest: “Er.....”, on Unknown Date.
I'm Ivan Zhao, currently in my mid-20s. In my university years I set my mind on becoming a cognitive scientist. However, after working in academia for several years, I have recently redirected my attention to the web.
I like design, especially design with clarity. It doesn't necessarily imply minimalism, as human vision systems have evolved to handle messy environments. Instead, I think the goal is to build a clear path between the screen and the viewer's perception - an information highway you may say. In order to do that, I draw inspiration from the craft of typography, cartography, and the sciences of visual perception.
I spend most of my days coding, primarily in Python, Cocoa/Objective-C, Javascript/Coffeescript, Google App Engine, HTML/CSS/jQuery, and occasionally in C++ & PostScript. I appreciate programs that are modular, lightweight, and as readable as an essay.
For fun I like to play basketball or listen to the East Village Radio. I am inspired by the works of Wittgenstein, Robert Bringhurst and Jeff Hawkins.
Work, collaborate, or just say hi.
